Juanjo Mosalini

Biography

Juanjo Mosalini was born on April 29, 1972, in Buenos Aires. A performer, composer, and educator, he has embodied the excellence of the bandoneon worldwide for over thirty years. Trained from a very young age by his father, he furthered his studies with pianist and pedagogue Gustavo Beytelmann. At just 18, he began an international career that has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious stages: Philharmonie de Paris, Philharmonie de Berlin, Rotterdam Philharmonie, London’s Barbican Centre, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Giuseppe Verdi Auditorium in Milan, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, the ancient theatres of Athens and Orange, Vienna’s Mozart Saal, and Salle Gaveau.

He regularly performs as a soloist with prestigious ensembles such as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Israel Symphony of Rishon LeZion, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Bretagne, the Orchestre de Picardie, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, the Camerata de Bourgogne, the Orchestra of Santa Barbara, the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, and the Orchestra della Magna Grecia.

His artistic collaborations have led him to share the stage with soloists such as Romain Descharmes, Ophélie Gaillard, and Adélaïde Ferrière — notably at the 2017 Victoires de la Musique Classique — as well as with artists from diverse backgrounds, including Toots Thielemans, Mino Cinelu, Gotan Project, Cirque du Soleil, Catherine Lara, Julien Clerc, Elli Medeiros, Juliette, I Muvrini, and Julia Migenes.

Active in the world of cinema, he has contributed to numerous film scores, notably with Gabriel Yared (Wings of Courage by Jean-Jacques Annaud), Éric Serra (Léon by Luc Besson), and Philippe Miller (Jeanne et le garçon formidable by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau), both as a performer and as a composer.

Founder of several artistic projects, he established the duo Bögeholz/Mosalini with guitarist Vicente Bögeholz, a duo blending electronic music and live interaction with double bassist Olivier Sens, as well as the Mosalini Teruggi Cuarteto, alongside Léonardo Teruggi, Romain Descharmes, and Sébastien Surel.

He is actively committed to passing on his art, teaching bandoneon at the CRD of Gennevilliers, the first institution in Europe to open a class dedicated to this instrument. Since 2009, he has also directed the tango orchestra there, and since 2016, he has led the bandoneon/tango department at the CRD Edgar Varèse, now recognized as the largest of its kind in Europe.
