“Truly extraordinary […] as full as a string orchestra, as delicate as a string trio.” – Daniel Barenboim
The Philharmonic String Quintet Berlin (PSB) is unique in its instrumentation: instead of expanding the string quartet with an additional viola or cello, the ensemble is completed by the addition of a double bass. This deliberate choice allows the ensemble to function like a string orchestra with one musician per part, since all five string sections are represented: ‘In our experience, the compositions gain enormously in sonic breadth.’
The quintet thus goes beyond the boundaries of traditional chamber music, moving towards a symphonic sound. The ensemble's repertoire naturally includes original works for quintet, but also many other pieces adapted to their specific instrumentation.
The Philharmonic String Quintet Berlin is the result of a longstanding collaboration between Wolfgang Talirz and Romano Tommasini with master cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva. Their first concert took place in February 2007 in Belgium, to great acclaim! In a short space of time, it has become a much sought-after ensemble, performing in highly acclaimed concerts all over Europe, and touring Asia every year.
